Recent ETM Executive Committee Decisions

The eThekweni Municipality has released a statement related to its most recent Executive Committee decision. These are summarised below:

CITY TO PURCHASE ADDITIONAL LAND TO ERADICATE INFORMAL SETTLEMENTS
An additional R199 million will be spent this financial year to purchase three parcels of land across the City as part of eThekwini Municipality’s strategic strategy to eliminate informal settlements.
This is an addition to the R25 million that has already been spent this financial year by the Human Settlements Unit to purchase land in a bid to fast track service delivery in communities.

CITY TO SKILL 200 UNEMPLOYED YOUTH IN PLUMBING AND ELECTRICAL WORK
The City will be training 200 unemployed youth through the artisan Development Programme over three years, specifically in plumbing and electrical courses.

This follows the tabling of a report at an Executive Committee meeting held today, 26 February for the Municipality to accept grant funding of R33 million from the Energy and Water Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA). The tabled report grants authority for the City’s Chief Learning Officer to enter into a service level agreement with the procured professional training provider in order to deliver and monitor as well as report on progress made. Acting Deputy City Manager of the Corporate and Human Resources Cluster Dr Mpilo Ngubane said youth will be selected for the programme from a City database. “We have advertised on a number of occasions for youth, who qualified, to register on a database to participate in such programmes. We renew and add new recipients to the database every three years. We advertised in November last year to be added to the database,” he said. The starting date of the programme is 1 March.

CITY TO SIGN MOU’S TO IMPROVE DISASTER MANAGEMENT RESPONSE
EThekwini Municipality will enter into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the South African Weather Service to supplement the City’s Forecast Early Warning System. The signing of the MOU is being done in an effort to improve how the Municipality actively deals with disasters and to reduce the risk to lives and infrastructure. In addition to further strengthening its response to disaster management, the City will also be entering into an MOU with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research to further supplement the Forecast Early Warning System. This is being done to manage the impact of coastal disasters and provide research opportunities on climate change and coastal patterns affecting the City and its residents.
